From a 90-10 Focus Ratio to 98-2
At a focus ratio of 90-10, the leads seem very similar, with a few big ones still out there. But you're beginning to control the bird from in front with good gun speed. Then 95-5 occurs and everything looks the same and slow and lead is no longer part of the process. Then you go to 98-2 and you're in the zone. All your plans are automatic and obvious. The pre-shot visual is instant and the sequence is exactly like the pre-shot visual. All you have to do is repeat it.
As our brains go through this learning curve at each level, our brains are making adjustments on the sequences and the things in our sequences and suspends from our consciousness anything that is unessential to our success or is confusing to our desired outcome. The more we do what we're doing, the more we do what we do becomes automatized.
Through chunking, when you're at a 75-25 focus ratio, you have finally done things in an organized fashion; your brain now understands more about what it needs to do to please you and give you what you want.
This is why shooters’ perceptions are so all over the map when they begin. There are too many things that the brain has to train that are counter to the way it's hardwired when you come out of the womb. And everybody gets them at a different point.
When shooters move into the 90-10 ratio, their inventory is much larger and their practice is becoming more effective and they are becoming much more consistent in everything they do. But their routines have too much junk in them, so they must shorten them and make them more effective.
